Building a waterfall bong (also known as a pinger) is perhaps the most efficient, entertaining, and discrete solutions when no appropriate smoking utensil is available.
The waterfall bong is made out of readily available parts, and requires a minimum of tools. A cousin of the misnomered 'gravity bong', the waterfall also uses principles of air pressure to produce and contain smoke. Whereas the gravity bong requires a vessel of water as well as empty container, the waterfall only needs the bottle, with a few slight, simply performed modifications.
Your cap should look like this now.
You will need:
- An empty plastic bottle, of any capacity, with cap
- one 1/4" socket
- screwdriver
- knife or drill
Make the Waterfall
- Using the screwdriver, make a hole in the center of the bottle cap and twist the bit of the screwdriver around a few times to make a circular incision. Keep making the hole bigger until it is just under 1/4" in diameter.
- Push the socket through the top of the cap, and if you made your hole the right size, you should now have a air-tight seal around the socket.
This hole works well, 1/4" triangle.
KA-BLAMMO! cloud in a bottle.
- Make a hole with the knife or drill somewhere in or near the bottom of the bottle. Make sure the hole is small enough to cover with one finger without releasing any water, and that you can manipulate the bottle with a reasonable amount of ease.
- Finally, pack the bowl with smokables. With your finger over the hole, fill the bottle all the way with water, leaving a 1/2" gap. Screw on the cap.
- As you hold a flame to the bowl, release your finger. The air pressure will lower inside the bottle, which draws air in through the cap. The bottle will pull a cloud until the air pressure is equal inside and out side the bottle. (as long as the water level is above the hole.)
- To take the hit, place your finger over the hole in the bottle, then remove the cap. Release finger, and take the hit.
Tips:
- The location and diameter of the hole is important. Its variables will determine the rate of water loss, and therefore effect the cloud.
- If you have a drill, drilling into the hard plastic bottom piece will work even better, as it allows for maximum capacity.
- Don't leave your cloud sitting in the bottle for too long; the longer you wait, the harsher and nastier the taste.
- This is the ultimate discrete smoking apparatus, it contains nearly all the smoke, and if you hold in your hit, you exhale very little smoke. Plus, a bottle with a hole lying around raises nary a question.
- Experiment with different capacity containers, from half liters, to water-cooler jugs.
- For thicker clouds, hit it before the water runs out, right after everything turns to ash.
- Try making the hole slightly higher up the bottle (maybe an inch or two). Then when the water goes past the hole, take of the cap, hold your hands over BOTH holes and shake the bottle for a few seconds. Not too long or the cloud will get stale. This will filter the smoke, making it easier to take, and it won't get as much nasty tar in your lungs.
Drawbacks:
- There is no filtering action from the water using this method. This means that the smoke will harsher and contain more heavy tar particles. This will coat the inside of the bottle with resin which will smell. You would have to get rid of these.
- Resin may coat the teeth or the lips, with a strong unpleasant taste. Be sure to have toothpaste at the ready.
- Due to the small bore of the bowlpiece, this arrangement is prone to blockage. Substitute the socket for an after-market bowl, preferably one with some compatible type of screen.
- You will most likely need more than one pull off of this type of piece, and so this also results in a marked increase in the amount of water readily available.
